サウジアラビアの若者たちと船上談義 Discussion Session with Saudi Arabia Youths on board

引率者のドクター・スルタンから若者たちと話をしてほしいと頼まれた。
同時通訳が付くことになった。
僕の活動を知りたいといわれたので、２０分ほどのプレゼンテーションをした。
東北支援、チェルノブイリやイラクの子どもたちの医療支援、そして、パレスチナの子どもの心臓移植の話をした。

大きな体の彼らが、目を輝かせて聞いてくれている。
感動しているのが、こちらにも伝わって来る。
その後のディスカッションも次々に手が上がり質問が飛んだ。
多くの若者が自分たちも困っている人のために何かをするべきだと本気で考えているようだ。
この若者たちはもともと、社会貢献をしているグループの中から選ばれている。
学生もいるが、多くは医師や歯科医師、コンピュータエンジニアなど、仕事を持っている人が多い。
なかには数ヶ月後、日本に２ヶ月ほどの短期留学をする若者もいた。

「鎌田先生の活動のなかで喜びは何ですか？」
「子どもを助けることも大事だが、例えば戦争や事故が起きないように原則的な対応を何かしていますか？」
「なんでこれほどの活動が出来るのですか？　その活動の動機を教えてください」
的確な質問が飛んだ。
１つ１つ丁寧に応えると、拍手をしてくれる。
賛同を表現してくれている。

終わった後も、握手攻め。
「泣くのを抑えて涙腺が痛くなりました」という青年もいた。
全員で記念写真を撮った。

彼らは、文化・宗教間対話を心掛けている。
日本とサウジアラビアは宗教も文化も違うが、船の上で十二分にお互いの理解を深める事が出来た。
こうやってたくさんの人が、旅をとおして異国の人や違う宗教の人と触れ合う事で平和は一歩前進するのだと思う。

Discussion Session with Saudi Arabia Youths on board

Doctor Sultan, the coordinator for the Saudi Arabian youth participants asked me to talk to them. We had discussion session with simultaneous interpretation. I talked about myself for 20 minutes: about my North East Earthquake aid, supporting the children of Chernobyl,Iraq, and heart transplant of Palestinian boy. Despite their manly appearances, they were listening to my story bearing their tears. After my presentation, they asked me some questions. Many of them are seriously thinking about what they can do to contribute to those who suffer.

These participants were selected from group of social contribution. Among the group, there is a student, but many have jobs such as doctors, dentists and computer engineers. One participant is going to Japan to study Japanese for 2 months.

“What is your joy and happiness in your activity?”

“Is it important to support the children, however, have you tried to approach those who are responsible for the cause of the problem?”

“What is your motivation to do this kind of hard activity?”

These questions were focused to the point. I tried to explain and answer each questions respectfully. Their applause was sign of their support.

After the session, we shook hands and took a group photo.

They are aware of importance of interfaith and intercultural dialogue. Japan and Saudi Arabia are very different culturally and religiously, however, we could come to deep understanding of each other onboard.

I believe that as many people are able to come in touch with different people from different background, it will be a step toward peace.
